Everyday English – Coffee Grinder Maintenance
Host:Hello everyone! Today, we are learning everyday English while talking about how to care for your coffee grinder!
First, the good news. You don’t need to clean it perfectly every single time, but you should do a light cleanup after use. The reason is simple: “leftover grounds” and coffee oils can “oxidize” and ruin the flavor. “Leftover grounds” means the remaining coffee powder, and “oxidize” means to react with oxygen.
If old grounds stay inside too long, the grinder can develop an old smell that absolutely affects taste. These old grounds can transfer “stale smells” and tastes to your next batch of coffee. They can also absorb moisture and “clump up,” which means to stick together. Eventually, this can cause an “oily residue”—which is a greasy leftover film—or even mold.
But don’t worry, you do not need obsessive “deep cleaning” after every use. Here is a practical routine you can follow:
After each use, just brush out the grounds and wipe lightly with a dry tissue or cloth.Every few days, do a more careful wipe inside.About once a month, you should “take it apart”—meaning to disassemble it—for deeper cleaning if possible.
A quick warning: Be careful with water! Especially with electric grinders, but even manual grinders can rust or degrade if moisture stays inside. So, the standard approach is always the classic method: “Dry brush plus dry wipe”.
Using whole beans and grinding them yourself already makes a huge difference. “Fresh-ground coffee” is almost a completely different drink compared to pre-ground or instant coffee!
Keep your grinder clean, practice these words, and enjoy your delicious coffee! See you in the next video!
